Desiree D. Flippins Memorial Scholarship

Visual and Fine Arts


Desiree Dawn Flippins was born on March 24, 1964 in Gary, Indiana to the late Lawrence T. Jones and Geraldine Denwood.

She was educated in the Gary Public School System, graduating from Roosevelt High School in June 1982. She obtained an Associate's degree in Paralegal Services from Commonwealth College in Virginia and a Bachelor Degree of Science from the University of Maryland. However, in her early years her passion for style and creativity led her on a path that unlocked many career opportunities. Desiree acquired a license in Cosmetology and successfully demonstrated her gifts and talent as a hair care professional for many years overseas and in the United States. Desiree was also employed as a Paralegal Specialist from the Office of the General Counsel of the National Endowment for the Arts located in Washington D. C. This agency funds, promotes, and strengthens the creative capacity in communities by providing all Americans with diverse opportunities for arts participation.

Desiree AKA. "Dawn" was a devoted military wife to the low of her life. Jerome of 39 years, who embarked on a journey around the world to include Texas, Maryland, South Carolina, Germany. Japan, ltaly, South Carolina, and Virginia. Desiree loved every minute of it and continued to travel for pleasure near and far. From this union they had three beautiful children.

She aspired to care and love all who God brought into her circle. Desiree committed herself to helping others by giving generously of her time and treasure those around her. She enjoyed meeting new people. Desiree passed away on November 10, 2022 leaving a legacy of compassion and service. This scholarship fund honors her memory and the belief that education is critical to human flourishing. Recipient must be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual or Fine Arts

Conditions

Scholarship payments of $1,000 will be applied to degree program in Visual or Fine Arts at an accredited College or University selected by the recipient and approved by the B. C. United Outreach Scholarship Committee Members.  The deadline for the Desiree D. Flippins Memorial Scholarship Application is March 31, 2024.  Please print clearly and in ink.

Procedures

  • Obtain a copy of the Scholarship Application Packet from the High School Counselor’s Office, Committee Member or request an electronic copy from bcuoutreach9@gmail.com. 

  • The applicant must provide a copy of an official acceptance letter, two letters of recommendation (Ex: Administrator, Counselor, teacher or one personal reference that’s not a family member), and a transcript (unofficial transcript is acceptable).

  • The applicant must also provide a written essay of at least 500 words.           

  • Topic: How has the arts impacted your life? 

           Why do you wish to pursue a degree in fine arts?

Eligibility

The applicant must be:

  • A graduating High School Senior (an official or unofficial copy of transcript)  

  • Accepted as a  FULL-TIME student to an accredited college or university

  • Pursuing a degree in Visual or Fine Arts

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher

  • Submit a 500 word essay on required topic listed about.

Award Terms

Payments will be issued at an appointed time.   An award letter will be sent to the recipient who meets the eligibility, terms and conditions for the B. C. United Outreach Scholarship.  

Note:  Award checks of $1,000.00 will be written to the selected school of enrollment.
